Sometimes when I read a manga… any manga really; I imagine what certain events or battles or incidents will look like as an anime.

But for now let’s talk about Shoujo manga in particular because I believe that lately it has become the underdog of the anime industry.

Some of you might not agree. But let’s take a look at most of the Shoujo anime in the past 2-3 years.

Anime production companies when they converted most Shoujo manga to anime; they have only released 12-13 episodes anime, some events have been completely altered, and the most annoying thing is that even if the manga ended; they don’t make a second season or even decent OVAs to finalize the story of the anime.

Actually, that doesn’t apply on recent Shoujo anime only; I mean there are some great Shoujo anime that were really successful in their time and yet when the anime ended we didn’t see much about it.

Examples:

Skip Beat

Fruits Basket

Ouran Koukou Host Club

Yamato Nadeshiko Shichihenge

I know that not all of the Mangas of these anime have ended. However, some have finished and that was that. It’s really annoying.

I won’t mention any new anime coz well… I’m hoping they will prove me wrong and create second seasons or decent OVAs for them.

I also hate how they change drastic events or even ignore such events altogether.

I like both anime and manga.. but lately I have been choosing Shoujo mangas over animes and even wish that some mangas won’t be turned to animes coz I’m worried they might be ruined.

I like almost all anime genres and Shoujo is one of my favorites. It saddens me how it’s being either ignored or not properly presented.
What do you think about this? and do you prefer Shoujo anime or manga?

I really wish they remade Fruits Basket. It’s one of my favourite manga and the anime really doesn’t do it justice. I also love Ouran High, but I feel like that anime adaptation is half-decent, while Fruits Basket just feels silly, and doesn’t get to the main bulk of the manga story.

So yeah, I prefer manga as well!

Yeah, at least with Ouran High you still get a decent representation of the manga; the feel is the same, the characters are ust as loveable, and the plot is pretty well lined up. They don’t make any attempt to close the ending either, which is good.

But with Fruits Basket, the whole anime feels more juvenile than the manga, and they don’t even address the freaking curse.

It’d be nice for them to just hold off on adapting a shoujo until it ends, or is in a decent amount of time, that they won’t have to worry about catching up to it. Because there are some excellent quality shoujo out here.

I completely agree with you. Even in Skip Beat; the anime was actually really good except for the ending where they wrote “next stage is…” Then ended the freaking anime with THAT. Then, they didn’t make even an OVA after that. I mean they gave the impression of creating a second season or something but then we got NOTHING.

I’m yet to check out Skip Beat (but have heard several good things about it, so it is on my list!) but that sounds absolutely terrible!! Obviously they were expecting the go-ahead for a second series that never came…

yeah, you’re probably right… tbh Skip Beat is one of myvery favorite shoujo anime and now manga coz the story is really good and the anime was great except for the ending T^T

I was in denial for a while, so I refused to read the manga for years, hoping that the anime will come back but it didn’t so I gave up and started the manga and it was worth it coz the manga is really good too.

oh, that will be good too but I have to tell you that the anime is really really good except for the ending.
I mean it makes you love the main character instantly coz they show her rediculously hilarious & naive nature.
I love the Seiyuu Inoue Marina specially in comedy anime ❤

I really feel you; this is mostly the reason why I don’t watch shoujo anime anymore. I just turn to the manga instead. I find it particularly frustrating to watch the anime, realise it stops somewhere, and then having to turn to the manga to continue. And after that since I am already ‘spoiled’ I’d want to see everything animated and be terribly disappointed that its not the case. I’d rather stick with the manga from start to end and forget it was ever animated, haha!

Oh man, I love the shoujo genre. It is tough to see good shoujo turned into a horrible anime or live-action adaptation because most of the time, it doesn’t go anywhere.

12-13 episodes aren’t enough, and if they decide to only do 12-13 episodes, I rather they stick only to the development of the main couple, and ignore the supporting characters that way they still get to the point. Yet, even then, it still doesn’t do any justice to the manga.

I wished they made a season 2 of Ouran High School Host Club. That was one of the best shoujo anime I’ve seen in my opinion.

You’re right. But as you said.. Even if they focus on the main couple; it won’t be fair to the manga as a whole. Sometimes, I like the storyline of the supporting characters too and I would like to see how they’ll be portrayed in anime.

Skip beat, I watched it like 30 times and its one of my very favorite anime EVER but it has the worst ending EVER.
Ouran is my 2nd favorite Shoujo anime and I watched it like 20 or 30 times too. I also hate the ending….. Obviously.

Yeah, I haven’t seen a shoujo anime that has a completely satisfied ending for me. It is a genre that seems to be neglected by studios.

I prefer reading shoujo series, rather than watching them. But that’s not to say that I don’t watch shoujo anime. I watch them, but not as often as I read shoujo manga. I like that I can take my own pace when reading manga, unlike watching anime where the pace is dictated by the episode’s run. I like romance when I READ them, but not so much when I WATCH them.

It’s just that there are a lot of moments in shoujo series that make me cringe, so when I read a manga, I can take my time to get over it before reading the next part. On the other hand, shoujo anime has its own pace, so it doesn’t really give me ample time to get myself together. You know what I mean?

Yes, I totally understand. When reading the manga you can absorb all the feelings completely as they come along. However, in the anime you can watch it and take in the feelings as the are represented by the anime which is not always a good representation.

The anime of Ouran High School Host Club completely ruined it for me. I read the manga up to the end, and finally got to watch the anime when it became available on Netflix. In the mnaga , the male MC is pure, and sweet, and the manga shows his love developing. But in the manga, although the viewer can tell he’s starting to like the female MC, it’s not as strong as iin the manga… and that’s why it’s not surprsng that he easily gets himself engaged with a French girl who goes to japan to marry him. It is also clearly implied that the male MC and his new fiancée had sex. After which, without showing any regret goes willingly goes with the fiancée to France. Ofc, he wasn’t able to, because in the anime, the main girl manages to block the road to the airport. In the manga, I don’t think he doesn’t get close to getting engaged to any girl ( although a rival does arrive at one point….. and he has to show some sort of affection to her. But that’s it… but in anime, they actually had sex.

If you recall, there’s this party where the grandma of the male MC is supposed to announce his engagement. Then , male MC goes to another room to play the piano with the French girl…. then , then French girl pushes him onto the sofa and it’s implied she succeeds in seducing him, because after sometime , they go back together to announce their engagement. The next day, they are still together, I suppose at the girl’s home, and this scene shows the girl taking a shower, and when she’s done, and still in her shower gown , she intimately hugs the male MC while he’s playing the piano. In manga and anime, the shower scene means something already happened. The hug between them is already intimate

Nothing like that happened in the manga. .

In case you haven’t noticed it, my signature is renxkyoko, from Skip Beat. I dropped Skip Beat a long time ago, and I don’t plan to pick it up again until I see something good again. It’s unbelievably slow – paced. I mean , I’ve been reading this for 8 years, for crying out loud, and I still don’t know Kyoko’s Valentine’s birthday gift to Ren. There are so many fillers that have taken up so many chapters, and issues like , ” I have no right to be happy ” to me is complete BS.

No, I don’t recommend it. I don’t like the main male protagonist and what ticks me off is the main girl. And I couldn’t believe the readers couldn’t see t the main guy who had a girlfriend was sleeping with his GF, while the main girl was actively pursuing the main guy. I so wanted the main girl to stop it already. It was surprising that on the discussion forum, the readers were all shocked when I pointed out that obvious fact to them. It wasn’t even nuanced. I then realzed the majority of manga readers were indeed very naïve and couldn’t see stuff that was right under their noses.

Well, it’s completed and not a lng story, anyway, so maybe you can read it, and tell me if I’m right or not. ^_^”.

Well, about Skip Beat. I actually didn’t start reading it till a little more than a couple of years ago when I was somewhat certain there will not be a second season T^T. I also hated the slow paced story and how the mangaka stretching almost every chapter. However, the current arc is just amazing coz the mangaka finally opened a door I was hoping she will. It’s about Kyouko’s “past”. I don’t want to spoil it for you in case U wish to pick it up again one day. Maybe I will read it and get back to you. But I have to say that I hate the “naive girl” kinda character coz they just piss me off with their so called “naivety” which I think is plain STUPIDITY. I hate it when they R too weak in front of the male protagonist. I mean, don’t be stupid damn it, it’s not cute at all it’s just STUPID hahaha. That’s why I like Kyoko; I mean she is stupid “in a funny way” but I like her coz she transformed herself and is trying to become stronger and build her life on her own. In Love Life, the protagonist is sweet and nice with a heartbreaking past but she learned through time to leave her past in the past and not live a negative life but pursue her dreams. I’m not saying that it’s a great manga but it is good, and I’m not done with it yet; I’m actually still in the beginning of the story so I’m not really in a place to judge the characters not the story hahaha.

SkipBeat is still n my mind, ofc. I did get to read the last 2 chapters, so I know about the Mom. I have 28 volumes of Skip Beat in my collection, and I vow to buy all the volumes. I don’t want to have an incomplete collection. Anyways, I used to get butterflies in my stomach just thinking that a new chapter was coming out, but I’d been burned so many times with so much cliffhangers that turned out to be duds on next chapter. So, now, I’m like, I read the chapter and eh, okay, and move on. On mangafox, Skip Beat is being analyzed to death. ha ha ha, like every little detail has deeper meaning.

I suppose my mindset is too entrenched in reality. I guess I’m really getting old. I ‘ve been doing too many eye-rolling nowadays. I still enjoy reading stupid shoujos because I like fantasies. Reality sucks . But I can’t help that reality creeps into my fantasies. ( Like when I notice about THAT in Ouran High School Host Club). Come to think of it , I shouldn’t have told you, right. You could have stayed a happy camper forever, ha ha ha.

Oh, and there’s something about Ren. I love Ren, don’t get me wrong. he he I think I was trashed too when I pointed out something about him. The fans didn’t want to accept it.

Hahaha, actually I like details and if I missed something I’d like it if someone told me about it. Also, I love Ren but TBH my very favorite is Kyoko but that doesn’t mean that I would trash whoever hates her or criticizes her coz.. well.. everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I don’t think it’s offensive to the fans or the mangaka. Anyway, I understand about the fantasy thing you talked about but reality does still creep into it and makes U say “WTF” hahaha. I totally understand .. If U have something about Ren then plz tell me about it. Let’s discuss it and who knows… maybe I’m thinking the same thing hahaha.

            Actually, I’m into details too…. otherwise I wouldn’t notice ” stuff ” if I wasn’t, ha ha

Well, this thing about Ren is not really a bad thing, but some readers may have forgotten a few ” stark” details about him, so much so, they now think Ren is this ” pure ” guy . Ren , in fact, has had so many GFs before he even turned 16, and yeah, he had banged them all. There was even a scene where Yashiro was teasing Ren that he seemed to have lost his ” technique ” as a playboy, a lady killer. And that maybe his relationships did not last because… Then Ren began counting and said he was very sure ” he satisfied them all ‘ ( his exact words )

The ” controversy” about my comments was when a commenter was very adamant that Ren never ” played ” around when he came back to japan and had been celibate all these years. I responded with a few home truths. Ren’s sex life is highly nuanced. Remember, Yashiro’s wth Ren almost 24/7. Who picks up whom I’m not sure. I don’t know if Yashiro even has a car. But yashiro has been teasing Ren about his playboy image, and Ren just laughs it off. Remember that scene where Kyoko has to stay over at Ren’s place ? Yashiro had to warn Kyoko to be aware. And guess what happened at ren’s apartment ? he almost seduced her ” Do you want me to teach you how to kiss, Kyoko ? ” And yeah, they were on the floor , wth ren on top after Kyoko fell down. remember that ? Ren’s sex lfe is highly nuanced. Yashiro knows, but Ren s the epitome of discreetness. Yashiro is even amazed that the media hasn’t gotten hold of Ren in that situation.

Also, just think…. Ren’s a teenager with raging hormones , and though he has issues with no right to be happy thingy, that only involves permanent relationships…… and doesn’t mean he can’t have ” temporary and short term happiness…. yeah, in that department.

I can assume though that since he has started to have feelings for Kyokoko, he has stopped having one night stands. tt’s not good to have Kyoko know that. After all, he knows Kyoko has been burned already.

I’m so with U in this. He was definitely a player before he fell for Kyoko. It’s as U said exactly and he’s not pure at all; he’s just “nice” to ppl even those he broke up with.. unlike Sho for example who takes women then tosses them aside when he’s done. Sho & Ren are alike in some ways.. like in being “possessive” and “obsessive” when it comes to Kyoko but the difference is that Sho is still a teenager while Ren is now a man, an adult. Ren has been in the business long enough to know how he should behave and “act” in front of others. The reason Kyoko fell for him is that she can see the real him even if he tries tries to hide it behind a smile. The same goes for Sho of course which made Sho fall for her specially that he thinks she will always be his. But….. Ultimately YES Ren definitely played around but as U said, since the Kyoko thing started, he stopped. Actually it will be unreasonable that he doesn’t have a sex life since he’s a grown man in his 20s hahahaha

Actually , he was 16 when he returned to japan. he went to school , and then started his acting career. I cannot imagine that 6 foot over tall man , terribly good-looking, blond with green eyes,… just imagine the girls…. and though Ren didn’t like permanent relatonships, he was just a 16 year old boy with raging hormones who had girls at his feet, so I can imagine that Ren would have girls for the sex. By the way, he turned 21 in February , and Kyoko had given him a gift …. Kyoko turned 17 in December., and Ren gave her a jewel . Now what Ren had been doing since he came as a 16 year old boy nd before he turned 21 is not even a question mark. Even Lowry had questioned him why he couldn’t make a move on Kyoko when Lowry in fact had known about Ren’s sex lfe. Yashiro of course knows all about him. They’re together 24/7 as his manager and he even talked about Ren making a move on Kyoko already, because yashiro could see Kyoko’s potential when she becomes mature…. and yashiro warned Ren, better get her now before someone else does.

Sorry 4 the late reply. Yes it’s true .. I remember both Lowry & Yashiro have mentioned something about Ren’s “love” life .. I can’t recall the details but as U said it’s quite obvious hahaha and I really don’t think that there’s anything wrong with that or that it makes him less “nice” coz it’s been shown that Ren is a good man but he’s definitely not an angel hahaha. The important thing is that he changed and stopped what he does after he realized how he feels about Kyoko.

That’s true. It doesn’t make him less nice or a player, ” currently “. I’ve forgotten how the discussion started. I dimly remember one poster saying once back in Japan, he has not slept with a woman. Of course, there’s no proof either that he has, but Yashiro is definite that he has been sleeping with women, but discreetly. I can assume though that he hasn’t since acknowledging his feelings for Kyouko.

Have you read/ watched Itazura na Kiss ? I haven’t watched the anime. Those who have watched the anime say the main guy is not as obnoxious in the anime….. because, oh, boy, that guy is one of the most obnoxious protagonists in shojou manga.
